Red Flags, Gray Areas, and Ethical Dilemmas is a continuing education training for Peer Specialists and Peer Specialist Supervisors that explores the complex situations that can arise when peer values, workplace expectations, and real-world circumstances intersect. While some ethical concerns are clear and straightforward, many situations involve competing priorities, uncertainty, and questions that do not have simple answers.

This training provides participants with a framework for navigating ethical decision-making while remaining grounded in peer support values, recovery principles, and professional responsibilities. Participants will examine common scenarios involving boundaries, confidentiality, dual relationships, self-disclosure, social media, safety concerns, and role clarity. Through discussion, case studies, and practical examples, participants will strengthen their ability to recognize ethical concerns, evaluate potential responses, and make thoughtful decisions that uphold both integrity and peer support principles.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

    • Identify common ethical challenges and gray areas encountered in peer support practice.
    • Describe the role of peer values and recovery principles in ethical decision-making.
    • Recognize situations that may require consultation, supervision, or additional support.
    • Apply a structured decision-making process to ethical dilemmas and boundary concerns.
  • Evaluate potential responses to complex situations while considering both ethical responsibilities and peer support values.
