What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say is a continuing education training for Peer Specialists and Peer Specialist Supervisors that explores how to remain present, supportive, and effective during difficult conversations when there are no easy answers. Whether someone is experiencing grief, crisis, hopelessness, trauma, or a major life challenge, Peer Specialists are often faced with moments where they feel unsure of what to say or do.

This training examines the difference between helping and fixing, and explores how authentic connection, curiosity, and active listening can often be more powerful than having the “right” response. Participants will learn practical strategies for navigating uncertainty, staying grounded in the peer role, and building confidence when supporting people through complex and emotionally charged situations. Through discussion, reflection, and real-world examples, participants will develop tools they can use immediately to strengthen connection and support recovery-oriented conversations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common situations that can leave Peer Specialists feeling uncertain or unsure how to respond.
  • Describe the role of presence, empathy, and active listening in peer support relationships.
  • Distinguish between supporting, advising, and attempting to fix someone’s challenges.
  • Apply practical communication strategies that foster connection during difficult conversations.
  • Strengthen confidence in responding authentically when there are no clear answers or solutions.
