Supporting People Through Crisis Without Taking It Home is a 1.5 hour continuing education training for Peer Support Specialists that explores the impact of repeated exposure to crisis, trauma, and emotional distress in helping roles. Peer Support Specialists are often called upon to support individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, situational, and systemic crises. While empathy and shared lived experience can strengthen connection and trust, they can also increase vulnerability to compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout.

This training examines the effects of crisis exposure, helps participants recognize early warning signs of emotional exhaustion, and explores practical approaches for maintaining healthy boundaries and emotional well-being. Participants will learn strategies for emotional regulation, recovery, and sustainable peer support practice while developing a personalized plan for protecting their wellness and maintaining effectiveness in their role. Through discussion, reflection, and practical application, participants will gain tools to support others through crisis without carrying that burden into their personal lives.
