Trauma-Informed Peer Support: Walking Together in Recovery is a 1.5 hour continuing education training for Peer Specialists that explores how trauma can shape a person’s thoughts, emotions, relationships, health, and recovery journey. Because many individuals receiving peer support have experienced trauma, understanding its impact is essential to creating safe, respectful, and recovery-oriented relationships.
This training introduces the core principles of trauma-informed care and examines how Peer Specialists can apply those principles through everyday interactions, communication, and support. Participants will explore the biological, emotional, and social effects of trauma, learn ways to foster safety and trust, and examine how empowerment, collaboration, cultural humility, and lived experience contribute to healing. The training also provides an overview of trauma-informed language, common trauma-related challenges, treatment awareness, and strategies for recognizing and addressing secondary traumatization in helping roles. Through discussion, reflection, and practical application, participants will strengthen their ability to provide trauma-informed peer support that promotes hope, connection, and recovery.
